How to get MSDN licenses?

$

0

Hi,

My company has some MSDN licenses managed by our IT Infrastructure Dept. Recently our developers needed MSDN licenses and they were told that MSDN licenses that are being held by our company can be assigned to individual developers, so that they can access Visual Studio Online, use Visual Studio Premium or Ultimate provided by our customers.

They advised that they need to clear microsoft certifications and get MCPId which can then be used for generating Technical ID and that can then be used for assigning the MSDN licenses to individual developers.

I had questions:

1. Is what the IT team advising correct - that is company's MSDN licenses can be assigned to developers once they have MCP Id / Technical ID?

2. What various certifications do the individual developers need to achieve so that they have MCP Id?

3. How much time does it take for the Technical Id to be generated once the developer has the MCP Id ?

Just wanted to understand better from the experts, hence these questions!

Thanks & Regards,

Sharad Kumar

Is my MSDN product key Subscription products worth any money? - No

Hi, i'm not sure if there is anyone that can help me here but here goes:

I have a load of software left over from when my business closed down, in particular to:
MSDN Subscriptions software products on up to 10 PC's, the software is dated 2005 and lists the following Microsoft Packages:

  • Commerce Server 2002 Development Edition
  • eMbedded Visual Tools 3.0
  • eMbedded Visual C++ 4.0
  • SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services
  • Office Access 2003 Dev Ext's
  • Virtual PC for Mac Version 7
  • Visual FoxPro 7.0
  • Visual FoxPro 9.0
  • Visual SourceSafe 6.0d
  • Visual Studio .NET
  • Windows 2000 Professional
  • Windows 2000 Server (all versions)Office Project Server 2003
  • Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003

I am unsure of what to do with this software and unable to get any answers, is this software of any use to developers? and if so, is there somewhere where i can sell this package online?

I also have the CD and key for NetAdvantage 2005 Vol 3 which cost $500, is that worth anything now?

Appreciate your help.

Software Download Issues on Windows 8.1

Earlier (From MSDN Subscriber Downloads) we had either Microsoft File Transfer Manager or Akamai Download Manager for getting software but now on Windows 8.1 using IE 11 it works a direct download with no suspend and resume options.

Even browser compatibility and F12 to change user agent does not fix this :(

Please suggest a fix for this.

DreamSpark account expiration and renewal process

$

My account expires at 23.12.2014. I am currently using VS 2013 Pro for my college projects and I will need the VS 2013 throughout my entire college course, that is, up to 2016. Also, I have been developing basic apps for my Lumia 1320 and testing them on my phone.

What do I do when the account expires? Also, do I get to test the apps on my phone, or do I have to use the emulator, since, I assume, my phone will not be registered as a developer's phone after the expiry. And as for VS 2013 Pro, I assume that will expire too along with my account.

I registered using photos of my college ID and my university exam admit card. Will I have to repeat that process again?

Bizspark licensing for TFS 2013

Hello All,

We have recently registered our company at BizSpark and we received an MSDN access for our primary account. We would like to setup TFS 2013 in our company. We will be installing TFS 2013 in Windows Server 2008 R2.

I would like to know that how many users can access my local TFS server without additional cost (ie. how many free accounts available to access TFS 2013 under BizSpark).

Thanks in advance for your quick reply

Access to Product Keys Claimed Prior to Subscription Expiration

$

I just tried to view a previously claimed product key for my expired MSDN subscription.  But, when I click 'My Product Keys', I received a message indicating that my subscription had expired with a reference number.

My understanding was that I could still view these keys, it's just that I would not be able to download software.  This thread (http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/9788c35a-b268-4309-a797-a8f3ca2e2213/subscription-expired-am-i-still-licensed?forum=msdnfeedback) seems to confirm my understanding.

Is there something I can do to view previously claimed product keys?

Thanks,

Jeff

BROKEN: MSDN Site community content submit

$

Folks:

Trying to submit "community additions" to MSDN documentation pages via the "Add" button is broken, often returning:

"*Error occurred while saving your data." message

This has been the case for some time.

I have just completed testing this on page:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/bb513617%28v=vs.85%29.aspx

I have tentatively determined that if the title plus body exceeds some quite short length like 200 characters, then the submit fails with the error message.  I can reliably get submit to succeed with a short title + message, and fail with a long combination.

PLEASE PLEASE FIX THIS! Not only would I like to be able to post, but more importantly I'd like the benefit of everyone else's posts!  Not to mention it makes Microsoft look incapable of writing and testing a web application.

Difference between a volume license MSDN renewal and a retail one?

$

Its really hard to decipher the difference between the MSDN retail license renewal and a volume licensing renewal that I see from third parties at a much lower cost

My guess is this - for everything that activated with a static activation key, the VL version of the renewal would be the same.

What looks like is different is the retail products.

For example, I get 5 keys for a Windows 8 (in all its versions) with the retail subscription (yes I know, development only)

If I switch to volume licensing, those keys go dark, and the other ones that I currently dont have access to go live?

If so, how many instances of a particular OS do I get? Do I get the same 5 activations, more of them, less of them?

Its quite confusing!

MSDN painfully slow, alternative download?

$

I'm downloading some ISO files from MSDN and is experiencing painfully slow speeds, at about 500-700kb/s. I'm getting the same slow results from home and the office.

This is to me strange due to the cost of MSDN, I have a 1Gbit fiber connection at home and 10Gbit at work and have no problems downloading content from other sources (like steam etc.)

It takes 2h to download Windows Server 2012 R2 from MSDN this to compare with some other means is less then 5min.

Guess the way to do this is to download the ISO from an alternative source and this would not be a MS approved one (my guesses).

Or is there an alternative way of downloading MSDN content?

MSDN Visual Studio Ultimate Subscription vs. Azure Subscription

$

When I attempt to connect to my Azure subscription from Visual Studio 2013 Ultimate x64 I get
"No windows Azure subscriptions were added. Sign in with an account that has subscriptions"

When I log into the Azure portal I see my subscriptions and my account is designated as the service administrator.

I opened a service ticket with azure support and the explanation I was given was...

Support Request Number - 113120611007668‏

"I can assure you that this is not an account\subscription problem. It is just that the Visual Studio 2013 is not supported for customers with MSDN Subscriptions."

Is this indeed the case? It just did seem quite right and I couldn't find anything in support information to substantiate it. Any information would be appreciated.

Secure Download Manager not installing after download

Hi there. I'm currently using a Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit operating system, and trying to download a copy of Windows 7 from my University for free. After completing the purchasing process, I have to download the SDM to get my digital copy of Windows 7. The problem I'm having is that I can download the SDM file, but when I click "Install" then nothing happens. I'm using Chrome browser, but I've also tried on Firefox to not avail.

Not sure if anyone else is having this kind of problem where the SDM file downloads but doesn't install, or if I'm just missing something but any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I hate to sound like a crusty ungrateful curmudgeon, but...

Trying to navigate MSDN is like nailing Jello to a tree, or herding cats.  I know the subject matters for frameworks, code and classes is vast, but here is just one example where I was trying to find information on using LINQ to XML, and searching for"Samples", so I posted the path I was offered:

1) http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb387098(v=vs.120).aspx
2) http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb387091.aspx
3) http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb397980.aspx
4) (dead end) http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/
5) Searched "linq to xml samples" = 7143 results
6) closest match? = maybe 101 LINQ Samples???
7) OK -- http://code.msdn.microsoft.com/101-LINQ-Samples-3fb9811b
8) Not a single one I found mentions XML - only in the lead subhead:
"Learn how to use LINQ in your applications with these code samples, covering the entire range of LINQ functionality and demonstrating LINQ with SQL, DataSets, and XML."

This is a relatively common experience for me, with circular references and dead ends.

Windows Azure is very powerful, but the tutorials are woefully out-of-date and do not match the existing experience.

I appreciate the forums help here and related sites (ASP.NET), but it seems like structure and maintenance on MSDN is right out the window.
